For the first time ever, Brad woke without a spontaneous erection pressing up against the back of his blue-haired lover. The unthinkable had finally happened. It was the guilt, he realized. If he’d only come clean about meeting Little Wing yesterday he wouldn’t be suffering these pangs of remorse now. Amazing how little it took to render a guy impotent!

To make up for it, Brad cooked a gourmet breakfast of scrambled eggs, chorizo sausage and refried beans, and then refused to let Zach help with the dishes. Afterwards, sitting by the pool, he thought Zach had never looked so beautiful. His hair had curled in the humidity, framing his face in grapevine ringlets. His skin held a blush of sun. His eyes sparkled like the ocean in the far distance, almost as if Brad was looking through two windows in his skull to the water beyond. It was the last they would see of each other for the next few days. Brad wanted to savour the moment as much as possible. The approaching separation was necessary, but he felt nervous about it, especially given the unexpected reappearance of his former lover.

At half past nine, they headed for the bus station. A wind had scoured the city overnight and the ground was dusted with fallen bougainvillea petals and the miniature finger-like blossoms of the trumpet flower. This was how Mexican winter made its exit, Brad noted, with a gentle shower of purple and orange covering the streets and sidewalks.

Brad waited as Zach boarded the bus with his knapsack and took a seat by the window. His heart felt heavy. The bus lurched onto the roadway and Brad waved till it drove out of sight. “Wait!” he wanted to call out. “Have you got everything you need? Money, clothing, cell phone…?” He felt like a worried father watching his only child leaving for university, far away and out of reach should he be required to help or give words of advice.

Brad turned and made his way back through town, feeling bereft. With Zach gone, he was determined to make headway finding Panther’s killer. He would focus his attention on work and push all other thoughts aside. It would be awkward knowing Little Wing was somewhere in the city and not attempt to meet up with him. There was so much he needed to ask, so many questions that only Little Wing could answer. Was it love he felt for his former partner or was it merely regret? Either way, he needed to rein in his emotions. A little temptation could be a dangerous thing.

His gaze took in the dusty streets. Of course, there were the usual distractions he could join in if he got bored, but the thought of yet another jungle tour with tourists “cutting loose” for the afternoon gave him pause. The idea of zip-lining through the trees similarly filled him with dread. Why a rational human being would want to hang suspended far above the earth for any purpose other than air travel was beyond him.
